Alert (TA18-106A): Decrease Networks Attack Surface

As fast as technology moves today with the ever expanding power of the supercomputer in our pockets, it is easy to assume that every industry is propelled at the same rate of technological advancement as the cell phone industry. Shockingly, that is not always the case with the basic network infrastructure of the Internet and even our own corporate networks that we are all dependent on but rarely think about.

A recent Alert (TA18-106A Russian State-Sponsored Cyber Actors Targeting Network Infrastructure Devices) published by US-Cert is the result of a cooperative effort between multiple security agencies: Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). This alert brings to light the tactics, techniques, and processes used by Russian state-sponsored cyber actors to attack network devices to enable espionage, intellectual property theft and acquire personal information.

In future blog posts we will break down Alert (TA18-106A) to discuss its technical details and how this information can be used to help secure your network infrastructure against these type of attacks. Although there is no silver bullet to solve all security issues, there are products which can decrease your networks attack surface and help detect malicious traffic and protect the network devices that are vital for the operations of your corporate networks.
